Summary

The current paper presents a comparative analysis of a vapour-injection scroll compressor (SCVI) and a two-stage reciprocating compressor (TSRC) based on its application range. It was conducted in two parts, on the first one; the compressors were compared in terms of COP, economizer capacity, compressor efficiency, and volumetric efficiency, using R407C refrigerant. On the second part, the seasonal performances of both compressors working in cooling and heating modes were analysed. As a result, the SCVI presents better COP and efficiency with pressure ratios below 7; it can be applied for HVAC and air conditioning, systems for refrigerated products up to -15°C like refrigerated transport (reefers). On the other hand, the TSRC performs better with higher pressure ratios (above 7), in applications like: domestic water heating applications at high temperatures (above 60°C), heat pumps for cold regions and refrigeration systems for low temperatures (below -20°C) as ultrafreezing applications and the like.
