Comparative thermodynamic analysis of gas mixture separation and liquefaction methods.

Métodos de licuación y separación de mezcla de gas: análisis comparativo termodinámico.

Author(s) : CHOROWSKI M., PIOTROWSKA A.

Type of article: Periodical article, Case study

Summary

This article is the Spanish translation of an article presented at the 22nd IIR international Congress in Beijing, China (see the Bulletin of the IIR, reference 2007-2435). Gas separation technologies play key role in technical gases production, natural gas processing, helium extraction and separation, CO2 sequestration and other processes. The presently used methods include cryogenic rectification, adsorption processes and membrane separation. The authors compare thermodynamic efficiencies of the above technologies with a ideal reference process characterized by minimum work input. The applicability of each method is analyzed with respect to the gas purity and installation capacity. They pay special attention to a small scale nitrogen generation unit based on a gas mixture fed Joule-Thomson refrigerator coupled with membrane air separation unit.
