Brief: VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow)

Japanese manufacturers are shifting their sales focus to VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems and are increasingly making technological advances in split air conditioners using an inverter. Based on information obtained from BSRIA and industry sources, with over 20 manufacturers in the world manufacturing and marketing VRF, the figures for 2004 estimated a market size of just over 200 000 units (including outdoor unit bases with motor size of 5 kW and over and "mini" VRF for residential use with a capacity of 3.7 kW). Japan holds the monopoly on this market with Daikin enjoying an over 40% share and Mitsubishi Electric just behind. Europe is the second largest manufacturer of VRF systems with approximately 40 000 units, followed by China and Korea with 35 000 and 20 000 units respectively.
