Optimised cyclopentane technology developed for appliances.

Summary

Work is underway in Italy to perfect the use of cyclopentane as a blowing agent for polyurethane foam insulation. Applied to domestic refrigerators and freezers, this is now structurally and thermally equivalent to previous CFC blown systems. Parallel to this development a guideline has been produced on the safe use of pentane. Further development is in the production of a polyurethane foam to replace silica in vacuum insulation panels. This has a conductivity about 30% of existing foam and is cheaper than silica. Combining the two technologies, suitable assemblies have been produced in which polyurethane vacuum panels are contained within pentane blown polyurethane refrigerator cabinet walls. D.W.H.
