Summary

In this work, an existing CFC-12 domestic refrigerator was charged with HFC-134a/HC-600a/HC-290 mixture without changing the mineral oil in the compressor; the system continued to work without any problems and also had better COP. The performance testing was conducted in a temperature-controlled room as per BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards 1476). The energy consumption of the new mixture was 4 to 11% less and the actual COP obtained using the calorimetric study was 3 to 15% higher than that of CFC-12. The overall performance proved that the new mixture could be a promising substitute for CFC-12.
