Summary

Temperature control in reefers is very important, especially in chilled mode and for sensitive cargo. Therefore, cargo owners specify tight temperature control requirements for the reefers. The paper analyses the temperature control of a reefer working in chilled mode, focusing on the differences in the temperature control depending on how is measured. It also shows what the cargo owner would see in the temperature logs of the unit as temperature measurements, and how the method is quite different depending on the manufacturer. The results show important differences in the temperature control depending on the instrumentation used, affecting not only to the temperature control but also other operating parameters. The results also show important differences in the real temperature control between two different units. Since the current standard of application in Marine does not address these issues, the paper discusses some proposals for improvement.
