Summary

Sustainable and innovative packaging industry has been facing a lot of changes. Technological innovations concentrating on marketing, labelling and extending shelf life, as well as protecting the environment, are transforming the future of packaging. In the current intensive plastic packaging analysis, manufacturers are exploring alternative solutions like plant-based fibers, such as micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) that breaks down to micro-level and replaces them in packaging material. Another innovative process is to produce packaging from biological waste and fungi (packaging made of seaweed is 100% biodegradable and edible). The design of sustainable or green packaging technology could decrease the environmental impact of food packaging by using edible or biodegradable products, plant extracts, and nanomaterials, which is the ultimate future aim of food-packaging technology. This paper reviews these innovative concepts and describes the future trends of primary and secondary food packaging.
