Summary

Recent studies have shown that whilst lower emission vehicle engines are required, the measured atmospheric pollution in cities has not dropped correspondingly. The diesel engines used on medium and larger refrigeration systems do not have such stringent requirements and would not pass emission tests for vehicles.
Systems other than vapour compression systems are becoming more common as manufacturers try to find more environmentally friendly solutions.
Currently there are standards on how to test the performance of the refrigeration machinery in terms of heat removal. No standard exists to test and measure the emissions produced by such refrigeration systems, nor are there any specific conditions to test.
This paper will look at issues encountered testing the emissions of refrigeration systems and propose a rough methodology to allow comparison of different technologies in terms of heat extraction and emissions as a result.
