Energy efficiency potential of HCFC-22 alternatives.

Author(s) : BIVENS D. B., DENISON G.

Summary

Three alternatives for HCFC-22 in air conditioning and heat pump applications are evaluated on the basis of thermodynamic cycle calculations, system tests, and future design changes: HFC-134a, and a zeotropic mixture of R32-R125-R134a. Two other alternatives were not included beyond initial screening. The evaluations indicate it is possible to exceed the energy efficiency of HCFC-22 with either of the R32-R125 or R32-R125-R134a mixtures if appropriate design changes are made. The energy efficiency potential of the R32-R125 mixture is somewhat better.
