Aerogels: the insulating material of the future.

Aerogele: Wärmedämmstoffe der Zukunft.

Author(s) : REISS M.

Summary

The author notes that this highly porous, very effective insulant, which is composed mainly of silicon dioxide and air, is environmentally safe, totally non-toxic and non-flammable. The results of measurements of heat conductivity of an aerogel-composite (i.e., aerogel contained, for example, in a polymer) are given. On the basis of these results and of analogies to other solid matrices (e.g., Armaflex), the energy potential is discussed using the example of an evaporator in a refrigerating circuit that is insulated with an aerogel composite, in comparison with a foam expanded with R11 or CO2.
