Summary

The paper summarizes the history of cold production, highlighting the use of different refrigerants. After beginning with water, CO2, SO2 and ammonia as refrigerants, up until 1930, then came CFCs and HCFCs, each with its "niche", until 1987. Then began the "crazy" period with plenty of new refrigerants and blends aiming at being environmentally friendly, and, as a happy end, we are now encountering the comeback of natural fluids such as ammonia, CO2 and water or air or hydrocarbons. The main properties of all these refrigerants are reported, with, in some cases, new rules for their implementation (as for ammonia).
