Effect of the R407C charge on the behaviour of a liquid chiller with plate heat exchangers.

Summary

Compact heat exchangers reduce the refrigerant charge in chillers and generally give better performances than traditional ones. The paper presents the results of the charge effect on a 10-kW liquid chiller with corrugated plate heat exchangers, using R407C. The authors show that the chiller's performance reaches a maximum near 3 kg of refrigerant mass. The ratio charge versus cooling power is lower than the one calculated for another chiller with shell-and-tube heat exchangers using the same fluid. The subcooling increases sharply with the charge whereas the evolution of the superheat is not regular, perhaps at random. Moreover, the authors observe that the use of a thermostatic expansion valve allows the chiller to keep the evaporative pressure constant.
