Summary

Vehicles, especially so-called off-road vehicles (forest, agricultural and other mobile heavy machinery) are working places for many people. Design of HVAC systems for vehicle cabins is today based on calculations for covering heat gains and losses, while thermal comfort of the vehicle operators is, more or less, neglected. In the work, parameters for determination of thermal comfort of the driver are evaluated. Evaluation is based on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations of temperature gradient and air velocity gradient in the cabin. Specific conditions in the cabin are taken into consideration, like substantial air speeds in supply air inlets, big glass areas and other thermal conditions different than in ordinary rooms. Thermal comfort is determined and evaluated. Standard comfort indices (ISO 7730, PMV= Predicted Mean Vote, PD= Percent of Dissatisfied) are also evaluated for this type of environment. Determination of the thermal comfort is illustrated with an example of the cabin of typical machine in a hot outside environment. The work is relevant for all types of mobile HVAC systems.
