Summary

A prototype electric scroll compressor was examined. The compressor efficiency was measured and losses were analysed. From loss analysis, the ratio of thrust bearing loss increases at the high rotating speed. Next step, the elemental test of the thrust bearing was carried out. The behaviours of a test piece and the thrust bearing friction have a strong correlation. Then, the technique of friction loss reduction was shown. Finally, the mass production type electric scroll compressor was designed using the above-mentioned technology. The body size of the new compressor was minimized by about 70% as compared with the prototype compressor. The efficiency was improved by about 3%.
