Liquefaction of gases with pulse-tube coolers.

Summary

Pulse-tube refrigerators (PTR) may be used to liquefy gases. In the most simple case, the gas flow from ambient temperature will be cooled by thermal contact to the intermediate and the cold stage heat exchangers only. A higher rate of liquefaction may be achieved when the gas flow is also in thermal contact with the regenerators. Numerical studies done for liquefaction of nitrogen with a single-stage PTR and for liquefaction for helium with a two-stage PTR show that only a small advantage is expected for liquefaction of nitrogen, but an appreciable gain is predicted for helium. Both systems have been analysed with a numerical code based on the thermoacoustic model. Special attention is drawn on proper adjustment of DC flow in such coolers. Preliminary experimental results for a single-stage system with about 120 W of refrigeration power at 70 K are also given.
