Alternative cycle time control methods for variable-temperature-source adsorption heat pumps.

Summary

Adsorption technology allows waste heat or solar energy to be utilized for cooling. These heat sources often have variable temperatures. An important factor in determining the performance of adsorption systems is the cycle time. The cycle time affects both the cooling duty and the COP of these systems. Usually cycle times are fixed after being optimized for the expected operating conditions. For variable source temperatures, fixed cycle times can lead to poor system performance. This paper investigates two alternatives to the standard control method for setting the cycle time. One method uses the concentration of ammonia in the adsorbent to determine cycle time and the other uses the temperature of the adsorbent. These alternate control methods are matched to a fixed cycle time optimized for a source temperature of 150°C and perform similarly to the standard method at this source temperature. The temperature of the heat source is then varied and the performance of the alternate control methods is compared with the fixed cycle time under these different operating conditions.
