Summary

This paper reports on a two stage CO2 transcritical refrigeration project which was financially supported by an Australian Government grant of AUD 472,000, i.e. 50% of the estimated project cost. The CO2 refrigeration plant replaces twenty two independent systems comprising air cooled HFC and HCFC cooling systems for blast freezing, cold and chill storage, office AC, factory cooling, process water chilling, and process and domestic water heating by gas and R134a heat pump, glycol heating for defrost, electric freezer door fascias and under floor heating. The plant uses nine compressors comprising three high stage compressors and two AC compressors with one common standby plus three boosters including one standby. Operating conditions are -5°C SST for high stage and chilling duties and -35 to -40°C SST for the cold store and blast freezer. The AC compressors also serve as parallel economiser compressors for the main chilling and freezing plant, which therefore operates at high COPs with a virtual gas cooler CO2 exit temperature of +5°C. The AC and high stage compressors may discharge either to the two stage gas cooler or two water heaters in series to heat water to 80°C. The significantly oversized and adiabatically assisted gas cooler will allow condensing at 5 K temperature difference between air entry dry bulb and condensing temperature. The plant will reduce specific electrical energy consumption, measured in kWhr/kg of frozen product produced, by 33%, gas consumption by 60% and global warming emissions – including HCFC and HFC fugitive gases – by 40%.
