Summary

In a passive type PEMFC system, axial fans operate to supply both oxidant and coolant to cathode side of the stack by using ambient air. It is possible to make simple system, because a passive type PEMFC does not use additional cooling equipment or humidifier. However, the cooling performance of the air-cooling system is lower than the cooling system which uses water as coolant. To ensure the system reliability, an optimized stack cooling strategy is necessary. In this study, simulation has been done to find best cooing strategy. We adopted various channel configuration and graded air flow rate distribution at the cathode side and external heat transfer coefficient. In addition, we observed the water distribution at the MEA of each cell to understand the dry-out phenomenon. five channel air-cooling PEMFC stack was developed and investigated. The cell with thick rib width channel and even air flow rate distribution shows better cooling performance. In addition, the amount of water inside the center unit cell MEA is significantly reduced by the overheating.
