Summary

An active package of corrugated cardboard has been developed, based on the use of essential oils (EOs) encapsulated in ß-cyclodextrins, for bulk packaging of fresh peppers. The inclusion complex EOs-ß-CD was incorporated into the aqueous emulsion that was applied as a coating to the cardboard. The vapors of EOs were released from the surface of the cardboard once the product was packaged and stored in a cold room at high relative humidity (RH), and deposited on the surface of the peppers. The use of this type of active container (a combination of carvacrol (80%) - oregano (20%)), with a dose of 300 mg EOs / m2 of cardboard, results in a significant reduction of the spoilage microorganisms, and a significant increase in the shelf life of fresh peppers packed in this type of active packaging, compared to packaging in conventional non-active cardboard crates (control).
