Summary

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON LARGE EVAPORATORS AND ABSORBERS OF A MULTIPLE TUBE BUNDLE DESIGN TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF SPRAYING DENSITY ON HEAT EXCHANGE COEFFICIENTS. OPTIMAL SPRAYING DENSITY AS WELL AS WATER VELOCITIES FOR THE UNIT'S HEAT EXCHANGETUBES WERE DETERMINED. ACCORDING TO THE AA. OPTIMAL VELOCITIES SHOULD RANGE BETWEEN 2.0 AND 2.5 M/SEC FOR EVAPORATORS AND 1.5-2.0 M/SEC FOR ABSORBERS. THE APPLICATION OF OPTIMAL RANGES RECOMMENDED BY THE AA. FOR SPRAYING DENSITIES LED TO SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION OF POWER CONSUMPTION BY RECIRCULATING PUMPS USED FOR THE UNITS. SO, A 40% DROP IN REQUIRED POWER WAS ACHIEVED FOR EVAPORATORS AND A REDUCTION OF POWER CONSUMPTION BY 12.5% WAS ALSO OBTAINED FOR ABSORBERS. THESE POWER SAVINGS COULD PROVIDE FOR A 600 KW CAPACITY MACHINE OPERATING DURING 5,000 HOURS PER ANNUM AN ECONOMY OF 10,000 KWH PER YEAR. RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AND GENERAL S. E.K.
