Summary

Industrial air conditioning should provide comfort conditions for the staff, high quality products and an optimum productivity. The paper presents the required ambient conditions for staff, according to the physical work load; varying from 15 to 22 deg C with 30 to 60% relative humidity and a sufficient fresh air change. Problems of ambient conditions for manufacture, much more variable according to the situation, are given, notably constant temperature for high mechanical and optical precision, and constant air humidity for hygroscopic products: low levels for electric insulants, powdered products and certain pharmaceutical industries (40%) and higher levels (up to 90%) for textiles and paper, for example. After having outlined all the required conditions and the existing means to satisfy them, the economic aspects of the problem are emphasised. Y.G.
