Reciprocating compressors or screw compressors?

Résumé

A comparison is made of the capital and operating costs of screw and reciprocating compressors operating under full and part-load. The units investigated included single-stage screws with and without intermediate pressure suction, two-stage screws, two-stage reciprocating a nd combinations of screw and reciprocating compressors. The cost of power is shown to be high when operating screw compressors at part load. For a maximum refrigeration load of 500 kW at -40°C, a two-stage reciprocating compressor is cheaper to operate than a two-stage screw machine, but the combination of a single-stage screw and two-stage reciprocating corn pressor appears better still.
