Résumé

World energy resources, especially oil and to a smaller extent natural gas reserves, are expected to decrease progressively in the forthcoming decades. As oil and natural gas cover most of our present energy requirements, it is urgently necessary to consider new sources and to investigate the possibility of using alternative forms of energy. Nuclear energy can only make up for part of the energy shortage. We will probably return to coal or equivalent products of which world resources are still considerable. For reasons of convenience this coal will be transformed partly into synthetic natural gas (SNG) or into liquid fuels by cryogenic processes. The first standard method consists of gasifying coal in the presence of oxygen; other methods are under consideration and such processes will certainly be developed luther in the next 30 years. At an intermediate stage, the energy consumed in all industrial processes will have to be saved. Optimisation of processes has therefore resulted from the increasing importance of energy. New processes are also being developed, the main purpose being to save energy in installations such as the cryogenic treatment of purge gas recovery systems for ammonia synthesis.
