Résumé

This paper outlines an experimental study of the transcritical expansion of carbon dioxide (R744, CO2) through adiabatic capillary tubes. The influence of both operating conditions (inlet and exit pressures, inlet temperature) and tube geometry (capillary diameter and tube length) on the CO2 mass flow rate was experimentally evaluated using a purpose-built testing facility with a strict control of the measured variables. The experiments were carried out following a full factorial experimental design. A dimensionless correlation to predict the refrigerant mass flow rate as a function of tube geometry and operating conditions was developed and validated against 66 experimental data points taken with a broad range of operating conditions and tube geometries. A good agreement between the calculation and measurement was achieved, with 97% of the data points falling inside a plus or minus 10% error band. See also this Bulletin, reference 2009-0589.
