Résumé

Supermarkets are very large energy consumers and on average they consume over 800 kWh/m2 per year. Energy consumption significantly affects the operation costs, and the energy saving issue has become a key issue in designing the HVAC&R systems. This is especially important for supermarkets, since the reduction of energy consumption represents a very efficient way to maintain the price level and achieve better competitiveness. Annual energy costs in the USA retail trade amounts to 13 billion dollars. Studies have shown that by increasing energy efficiency in supermarkets, this industry may save up to 3 billion dollars a year. Moreover, the decrease of operation costs of 5000 dollars per month may be more valuable than sale increase by 100 000 dollar since the sale increase also implies increase of product price, labour and other business costs. Additionally, energy saving is constant, while the sale increase may fail.
