Résumé

This paper investigates the impact of the using a heat pump to condition a thermally efficient home. Two climates are simulated: cooling dominated Dallas, Texas and heating dominated Chicago, Illinois. A heat pump offers the ability to utilize electricity to efficiently provide heating, which can be supplied in part by electrical generation from photovoltaics. This option offers both an energy savings and environmental advantage over using a non-renewable energy source such as natural gas. In addition to photovoltaics, a solar thermal system is investigated to provide a portion of the building’s heating load. The life cycle costs and source energy consumption of these systems are compared to an efficient conventional system consisting of an air conditioner and natural gas furnace.
