Résumé

This paper presents analysis of the impact of gas-fired heat pumps on energy consumption for space heating and cooling of a library building in Canada. A single effect gas-fired absorption heat pump (GAHP) that uses ammonia-water as the working pair has been installed at a library building in Tweed, Ontario. Building simulation model was created in TRNSYS along with MATLAB code for the GAHP which was called in TRNSYS. Simulations were run for the years 2012 and 2013. The energy consumption of the building simulation model with the GAHP was compared with simulation model of the same building using conventional cooling equipment
having seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of 14 and heating equipment having annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 76 %. Results show reduction in the energy consumption, fuel cost and greenhouse gas emissions when operated in heating mode. Savings and GHG emission reductions in heating mode were found to be sufficient to justify the use of GAHP in both heating and cooling modes despite the seasonal performance factor in cooling mode being less than ‘1’.
