Résumé

An economized two-phase injection (ETI) system has been investigated under extreme high ambient temperatures. An Environmental Control Unit (ECU) for military applications with a cooling capacity of 17 kW was retrofitted with a plate heat exchanger (PHX) economizer and an electronic expansion valve to control the injection state during the compression process. Two-phase injection was compared with both saturated vapor injection and no-injection (baseline) under different testing conditions up to an ambient temperature of 51.7 ºC (125 ºF). The experimental results show a significant reduction in compressor discharge temperature up to 11.4 K and an improvement in cooling capacity up to 10% while maintaining approximately the same COP. The increase in compressor power consumption suggested further potential for ETI optimization for air conditioning (AC) application at high ambient temperature.
