Résumé

Acknowledged future climate change and sustainability impacts have accelerated the development of national and international policy responses. In 2001, the British Government introduced the Climate Change Levy Package which included the Climate Change Levy and the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme for Energy-Saving Technologies, with supporting Energy Technology List (ETL). In 2005, the European Union (EU) adopted The Ecodesign Directive for Energy-using Products. However, despite a common focus on energy efficiency the Ecodesign directive and the ETL affect the market differently. In an economic climate of sustained and continuous above inflation energy price increases in the UK, saving energy has become a more accepted practice to aid continued commercial profitability, and must be accounted for by equipment suppliers, consultants and end-users alike. This paper focuses on refrigeration technologies and the impacts of the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling directives and the ECA Scheme’s ETL through a case study of the commercial service cabinets (CSCs) sub-technology.
