Activities of the IIR’s Commission D2 on Refrigerated Transport

The role of the IIR is well recognized worldwide, and in particular the expertise of the members of Commission D2 makes an important contribution to refrigerated transport issues: avoiding the wastage of food and the minimizing of emissions.
The IIR’s Commission D2, Refrigerated Transport, is extremely active. In addition to the IIR’s four yearly congress, Commission D2 is participating in the IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain, is operating an IIR Working Party entitled “Cold Chain for Pharmaceutical Products” chaired by Gérald Cavalier, and annually, the Sub-Commission D2 CERTE on Test Stations meeting. This group advises WP.11, the United Nations working party on refrigerated transport. Also, in addition to these activities, its members have recently assisted with an important IIR informatory note, which is discussed later.

This year’s D2 CERTE test engineers meeting was held in Paris directly preceding the sustainability conference. Following the resignation of Geron Johansson after many years of service as the chair due to a promotion within his company, this year, saw the appointment of a new chairman (Eric Devin) and a new secretary (Tobias Mynott). The group wished the ex-chairman success in his new important appointment and thanked him for his contributions over the nine years of being in the chair. During the meeting, several technical issues were discussed in detail for presentation of findings to WP.11, but of particular significance was the discussion on methods for re-certification of multi-compartment vehicles and non-destructive methods for determining small vehicle insulation thickness.

In November 2012, the IIR published an important informatory note “Risks Inherent in the Use of Counterfeit Refrigerants”. This follows a series of transport refrigeration explosions, which turned out to be most likely caused by refrigerants contaminated with methyl chloride. Several members of Commission D2 were involved in this project, and made available their expertise. This publication is available for download: www.iifiir.org.

On April 2-4, 2013, the 2nd IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain was held in Paris, France. This conference followed the successful first conference held in Cambridge, UK. It presented a wide variety of pertinent refrigerated transport issues (see “IIR News” and “Technology” sections)

During the meeting, the “Cold Chain for Pharmaceutical Products” Working Party met and discussed new steps that could be made to improve this refrigerated transport field and additional publications that could be produced.

The role of the IIR is well recognized worldwide, and in particular the expertise of the members of Commission D2 makes an important contribution to refrigerated transport issues: avoiding the wastage of food and the minimizing of emissions.
