Briefs: Antarctic ice cores travel to Colorado
Ice cores estimated at several million US dollars were successfully transported across the equator to a lab in south-west United States in 12-m refrigerated containers, conceptualized by the US Antarctic Program support staff and designed and built by Klinge Corp. The containers were designed to maintain the ice cores under -20°C at all times during the 6-week journey, equipped with numerous fail-safes and were over a year in the making. Klinge Corp. specializes in the transport of dangerous and highly valuable goods and offers a line of dual refrigeration systems, in which the first system operates with 4.8 kg of R404A refrigerant charge and the second operates with 5 kg of R-404A refrigerant charge. Containers are also equipped with on-board back up refrigeration and power generation systems. Source: RACA Journal, October 2010
