According to the 2012 IARW Cold Storage Report, with 112 million m3, the USA has the largest cold-storage capacity of any single country in the world.

Between 2008 and 2012, the US refrigerated warehouse industry grew at an annual compound rate of 12%, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s survey (NASS).
This figure represents general cold storage but excludes apple and pear storage facilities.

Nearly all the increase in capacity in the USA since 2010 was related to “public warehousing” (i.e. warehouses available for hire), which currently represents 76% of the nation’s cold storage.
This is a continuation of a 20-year trend of increasing share of public cold-storage over privately managed cold stores.
