For the past 20 years, the use of air conditioning has increased throughout the US with the most pronounced increase being in the South, according to a new report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Nationally, electricity consumed for air conditioning has increased 39% since 1993 and accounts for 14% of all electricity consumed.
In the South, electricity consumed for air conditioning has increased 43% and now accounts for 21% of all electricity consumption in the region. By 2009, 96% of households in the South used air conditioning (vs 89% in 1993).
