Figures: the cold chain in Germany
According to the VDKL's latest survey on refrigerated and frozen storage capacities in Germany, in 2005 there were over 728 cold stores with a capacity over 2000 m3. Overall capacity amounted to 20 million m3. There are over 55 000 lorries and 43 000 trailers in Germany, whose overall transport capacity equals almost 1 million tonnes. Frozen food consumption per capita progressed by 13.1 kg in 10 years; it reached 37.1 kg in 2005 and is predicted to reach 38 kg by the end of this year. These predictions are confirmed by consumer surveys and by the fact that the German intake per capita in frozen foods is still much lower than that of the USA and of European Countries other than Germany.
