Fridge innovations: Flying fridge
A mobile fridge, recently developed by AirContainer, KTH and SAS Cargo Group and nick-named "the flying refrigerator", is a perfect way to ensure an unbroken food chain as it uses active refrigeration. Previously, refrigerated air freight involved use of dry ice, with which it is difficult to keep a constant temperature for a long time or to obtain an even temperature throughout a container. The mobile fridge runs on electricity and maintains a constant temperature between 2°C and 25°C over 36 hours in the absence of a power source. It can also be connected to power mains for pre-chilling, or to a truck DC system. The fridge is primarily designed for products, drugs in particular, that require stable temperatures and will be ready to use in September 2006.
