A recent article* by researchers from the Autonomous University of Mexico City presents an assessment of the savings achieved since the introduction of recent national official standards setting maximum energy use caps.

Since the application of the first standard 015-ENER-1997, energy savings of 20% were achieved by 2010. After an update of the standard in 2002, called NOM-015-ENER-2012, additional energy savings of 30% were achieved.

This study estimated that refrigerators manufactured before 1997 consumed 50% more energy than those made in 2010. Up to 8 million tons of greenhouse gases were also avoided.
