La Chine compte un million de camions au GNL en 2025

La flotte chinoise de camions roulant au GNL a presque triplé depuis 2019 et devrait atteindre plus de 1,2 million d’unités d’ici 2030.

In recent years, China’s transportation sector has undergone a rapid uptake of LNG as a replacement for diesel in heavy-duty trucking. Government subsidies and tighter emissions standards in recent years have supported this transition.

According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), the LNG truck fleet has nearly tripled in size since 2019 [1]. Following a sharp decline in local LNG prices, about 109,000 LNG-fuelled trucks were sold in China in the first half of 2024, representing more than twice the number of sales at the same period in 2023, according to Reuters [2].

In the first half of 2024, gas and LNG trucks comprised 35% of heavy-duty truck sales compared to 9% for battery electric trucks [1].

LNG trucks consumed about 22 million tonnes of LNG in 2024 [1], coming from LNG imports as well as China’s fleet of domestic liquefaction plants for pipeline or domestic gas.

According to Shell LNG Outlook 2025, China’s fleet of LNG-fuelled trucks is estimated at 1 million in 2025 and expected to reach more than 1.2 million trucks by 2030 [3].
