London's Air Ambulance is now using phase-change technology to transport blood on board its aircraft and rapid-response cars. Instead of using normal saline – which does not carry oxygen –  as resuscitation fluid, the medical teams can now transfuse blood at the scene of the incident.
Such pre-hospital blood transfusions are expected to improve the patients' chances of survival.
Re-usable Credo packaging manufactured by SCA Cool Logistics is being used. The packaging features passive vacuum-insulated panels and phase-change materials and is available in several temperature ranges.
