Russian authorities granted special permission for the construction of the country’s first ammonia refrigeration plant for the 1814-m bobsleigh track constructed in Krasnaya Polyana in the Western Caucasus, for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The GEA project team managed to convince the responsible authority of the advantages of ammonia over synthetic refrigerants and get special permission despite safety regulations banning the use of ammonia in Russian sports facilities. The system uses four ammonia screw compressors, has a total of 4.2 MW of cooling duty and 4 km of supply piping along the track.
