The IIR will be present at COP-10
The Tenth Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 6-17, 2004. For this event, the IIR prepared, thanks to networking with members of the Science and Technology Council, an editorial entitled Global warming: refrigeration-sector challenges. This editorial will be published in Responding to Climate Change, 15 000 copies of which will be handed out to COP-10 attendees. COP-10 will no doubt be a key-event since the Russian government officially announced on September 30, 2004 that it agreed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Provided that the Russian Parliament gives its final approval, this protocol will enter into force 3 months after the official ratification of Russia. The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, aims to reduce the total volume of 6 greenhouse gas - including HFC - emissions in developed countries by at least 5% with respect to the 1990 levels of these gases, during the period 2008-2012. During COP-10, discussions could be opened on new emissions reductions commitments starting from 2013 which this time could involve the developing countries.
