Another captivating workshop organized by the IIR during the 7th IIR conference on sustainability and the cold chain, took place on April 13, 2022, and addressed the following topic “Projects on clean and efficient refrigeration solutions for food and healthcare sectors in developing countries”. The event was chaired by the IIR director general, Didier Coulomb, and involved five presentations on the main ongoing projects promoting: the application of clean and sustainable off-grid solutions brought by the EU SophiA Project (coordinated by the University of Karlsruhe) - Clean and efficient cold chain solutions in the livestock sector in Bangladesh (A technical consultancy service to the World Bank LDDP project coordinated by the IIR involving experts from RD&T, BUET, BRAC, HWU, and UoB) – An environmentally friendly Indian refrigeration sector (INDEE+ project coordinated by NTNU) – The Africa center of excellence in sustainable cooling and cold chain hubs (Coordinated by the UoB) and the IIR-World Bank cold chain book presentation on operational good practices in cold rooms for agricultural produce and food in hot climates. About 104 people from different backgrounds: academics, industries, and policymakers subscribed to the event.

The workshop was followed by a thorough panel discussion chaired by the UNEP and involving experts from the World Bank, UNEP, and FAO. The panelists discussed the way forward for the fragmented efforts of the international assistance when supporting the implementation of new cold chain technological solutions. The emphasis was put on the need for an integrated systems approach that combines efforts from all international funding organizations to first understand the sector gaps in emerging economies that will later help to identify the priorities at both sub-sector and country levels. The collaboration between these organizations was mentioned to be a key solution for the non-availability of reliable data. Setting common roadmaps and continuous communication strategies between them will help to access a complete picture of the needs of the field at a country level to help make the best investment decisions.
