Honeywell recently announced that its new HFO-based Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA) had received final approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be used in foam insulation in refrigerators and other applications in the US. Whirlpool Corporation will be the first refrigerator manufacturer in the US to use it.
Honeywell Solstice LBA (formerly known as HBA-2) has a GWP under 5 and is a near drop-in replacement for HFC blowing agents.
It is said to offer an 8-10% improvement in efficiency over refrigerators tested with hydrocarbon blown foam insulation, and a 2% improvement over R245fa, currently the most widely-used foam blowing agent in the US.
