Résumé

The purpose of this study is to show the actual conditions of the consciousness and behavior of residents and the indoor climates of houses in Japan. One topic related to discussion on the improvement of houses since the Meiji era has been the choice of sitting on chairs or on floors. The results showed that the poor thermal environment of houses is related to the choice of sitting on floors. Since residents heat only the living room, the time they stay in the living room increases in winter. Thus, the lives of residents in winter are restricted by the low temperature. Well-insulated and airtight houses afford a wide range of sitting types in the winter. The postures of residents in the living room were surveyed by questionnaires. During the summer, a high number of male residents in their 60s lay down on the floor, while the number of male residents sitting on the floor was highest for those under 10 years old. In the female group, the highest number of residents sat on the floor for all age groups. During the winter, the number of residents who lay down increased among those in their 60s, while the number of male residents sitting on the floor was the highest for those under 10 years old. In the female group, the highest number of residents sat on the floor for all age groups. Among those under 30 years old, the number of residents who lay down was also ranked high. Behavioral temperature regulation with regard to the choice of posture was observed in both summer and winter.
