Currently there is an increasing interest on the energy performance analysis of absorption chillers in operation to compare it with the expected chiller operation. Moreover the direct recovery of residual heat from cogeneration engines in the form of hot water to
produce cooling is a very attractive solution to reduce the consumption of electricity to produce cooling. On the other hand, this technology is very attractive for its possible contribution to increase the energy efficiency in District Heating and Cooling networks.
The aim of this paper is to perform the thermodynamic analysis at partial load of a single effect absorption chiller. A particular attention is paid to study how the thermodynamic properties of the external fluxes influence the heat exchangers and consequently the internal streams and the performance of the system. Using the data available from the monitoring system, it is possible to develop a detailed model for a complete thermodynamic analysis of this machine using the process simulator Aspen Plus. Process simulators offer already built blocks corresponding to characteristic unit operations that can be easily connected to design complete absorption chiller cycles.
The proposed model and methodology to calculate the chiller operational parameters at partial load has been applied to a SE absorption chiller in operation in a DHC network. When only the external parameters are available is not possible to calculate the internal parameters of the cycle. Therefore initially is necessary to estimate a range for the most critical internal parameters that will allow the estimation of the complete chiller performance. It was shown that these range decreases as the cooling load decrease. With the proposed methodology, the internal state points are evaluated at different load conditions. A linear dependency is obtained for the heat exchanged in each main component with the load but with different slope.
