Résumé

High-temperature heat pumps are expected to cover a considerable share of process heat demand in future energy systems, while efficient solutions with a high end-user acceptance and low investment cost are inevitable. Steam-based heat pump systems are a promising technical solution, while most challenges are related to the availability of steam compressors. Currently, various steam compressor developments are ongoing, comprising rotary vane compressors, various turbo compressors, screw compressors, spindle compressors, piston compressors, and roots blowers. This article gives an overview of the ongoing technologies by outlining advantages and challenges for the respective technologies. The technology characteristics are substantiated with an analysis of application areas and combinations with other heat pump equipment. The analysis of the application areas is substantiated with physical limitations as well as findings from a state-of-the-art review. Based on the comparison of technology potentials and availability, an outlook of the technology development perspectives is given. Furthermore, promising application areas are defined for the technologies.
