Résumé

Absorption refrigeration systems (ARS) are technologies that can be driven by waste heat to supply cooling demands. In ARS that use H2O/LiBr, two severe operating problems are often present: salt crystallization and corrosion. In order to avoid them, substitution of LiBr by alternative absorbents has been considered. In this context, ionic liquids (IL) arise as an attractive option since they present several advantages. Thus, this paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis, from First and Second Law perspectives, of a single-effect ARS using water as refrigerant and two different imidazolium-based ionic liquids not widely explored yet as absorbents: 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium ethylsulfate ([EMIM][EtSO4]) and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]). Fundamental thermodynamic properties of pure ionic liquids were estimated by group contribution methods. Mixture properties of H2O/IL streams were computed by means of UNIFAC-Dortmund, a model also based on the idea of group contribution methods. Results have shown that thermodynamic performance of H2O/[EMIM][EtSO4] mixture was superior to that of H2O/[EMIM][BF4]. Particularly at lower temperatures in absorber and condenser, H2O/[EMIM][EtSO4] mixture has shown COP and ?ex (exergetic efficiency) profiles close to those from H2O/LiBr. In a specific case, maximum values of COP and ?ex are only 3.2% and 10.7% greater for H2O/LiBr. So, H2O/[EMIM][EtSO4] can be taken as a competitive pair against H2O/LiBr at certain conditions, mainly in the view of the risk of LiBr crystallization and corrosion in equipment and pipes.
