Experimental performance analysis of an air condensed ammonia chiller with critical charge.

Analyse expérimentale des performances d'un refroidisseur à l'ammoniac à condensation par air avec une charge critique.

Résumé

The applications of new policies for the sustainable development together with the high price achieved by the fluorinated refrigerants have greatly attracted the attention to natural refrigerants solutions. Due to the difficulties associated to refrigerants like ammonia, the key factor to safely implement it is the reduction of the refrigerant charge to minimum levels. This article reports the experimental performance analysis of a novel design of a compact ammonia chiller with a specific charge of 75 g/kW. The refrigeration unit presented is an air cooled chiller with microchannel condensers, semi-hermetic screw compressor, miscible oil, single-stage oil separator and dry-expansion plates heat exchanger. The unit tested supplied 35% propylene-glycol at -8ºC with a capacity of 250 kW. The results of the experimental analysis proved that, with a careful design of the circuit and components selection, an efficient ammonia system with much reduced specific refrigerant charge can be built and safely operated.
