System thinking for evaluation of the performance of heat pump systems.

Résumé

The paper stresses broad systems thinking for heat pump (systems) when evaluating performance or when determining system efficiency. It may concern the heat pump system only or the energy system as a whole. A high COP1 for the heat pump unit is always beneficial from an environmental and economical point but it is important to understand that it is strongly dependant on the dimensioning of the system (sizing), limitations in heat source/heat sink performance and design, unnecessary high temperature lifts (setpoints), and finally, of the relation between heating and hot water duty. It is therefore critical for the widespread use of heat pumps to fully understand the influence of the various wider system(s) on heat pump performance. The Res-Directive of the EU indirectly suggests a minimum level of heat pump performance expresses as seasonal performance factor, based on the conversion efficiency for electricity in the EU. These numbers are realistic and most heat pump installation should be able to exceed those numbers taking the wider system into consideration properly.
