Résumé

The climate protection goals of the German federal government ask for a reduction in CO2 emissions by 80 to 95 % before 2050 compared with emissions in 1990. In order to achieve this goal the primary energy consumption shall decrease by 50 % from 2008 to 2050. At the same time the share of renewable energies shall increase from the present 17 % to 80 % in 2050. Sun and wind are not available 365 days around the clock. The ambitious climate protection goals of the Federal German Government will require in addition to the drastic expansion of renewable energies the development of efficient energy storage technologies. All energy storage technologies exhibit efficiencies below 1, considering the storage efficiency itself. Looking at the whole refrigeration or air conditioning system, latent cold thermal energy storage (LC-TES) can have energetic benefits; i. e. cold - stored in form of latent energy - can not only store energy, but can – if done properly - at the same time increase the average annual energy efficiency of the overall system. An important requirement is the availability of PCM with phase change temperatures close to the supply temperature level. The paper will show the main factors of influence and presents suitable latent cold thermal energy storage.
