Calorimètre différentiel pour tester l'efficacité des échantillons traités pour le refroidissement radiatif.

Differential calorimeter for testing efficiency of samples processed for radiative cooling.

Résumé

Radiative cooling is nowadays being revisited as an effective mean to passively evacuate heat in systems. The existence of a wavelength window of atmospheric transparency (between 8- 13 μm) allows sending heat to the outer space. Materials with surfaces of enhanced emittance in this window are the key for passive heat evacuation. In this work, we present an experimental system designed to test the efficiency of samples as radiative coolers. This “differential calorimeter” is composed of two identical devices where heat is applied and temperatures are monitored. Equilibrium temperatures are directly related to the heat evacuation capacity of the samples. Micro-cylinders structured on the surface of glass samples demonstrate to provide an increased emissivity in the thermal wavelengths, which is translated into an enhanced radiative cooling functionality tested with the presented system. Increasing the radiative cooling capability for glass surfaces is important for several applications such as for building integration and photovoltaics.
